In this paper, the author attempts to describe some important core values of the Soninke world view. The ideals of being responsible (butte), working hard golle), being properly respectful (gacce) and having a proper sense of shame (yaagu) are integral to Soninke society. As the unknown author of Soninkara Danbe, says, “If a person does not live this way, he cannot say he is a Soninke.”
